Why is it so important these days?
By Ariadna Vilalta, Psychologist specialized in Cyberpsychology
We live in an increasingly digital world. We spend much of the day connected: working in front of a screen, interacting on social networks, playing online, buying in e-commerce or learning from virtual platforms.
But have we stopped to think about how all this affects our mind, our emotions and our relationships?
This is where the cyberpsychology He can help us.
What is cyberpsychology?
Cyberpsychology is a relatively new branch of psychology that studies how digital technologies influence human behavior, emotions, cognitive processes and interpersonal relationships. It is not just about analyzing the use of social networks or video games, but about deeply understanding how the digital environment transforms our way of thinking, feeling and acting.
What areas does a cyberpsychologist work?
We cyberpsychology professionals intervene in a variety of contexts and problems. Some of the most common areas are:
1. Digital mental health
We explore how excessive use (or misuse) of the Internet may be related to anxiety, depression, digital addiction or sleep disorders. We also work to promote healthy use of technology and establish healthy limits.
2. Cyberharassment and digital violence
From bullying on social networks to digital gender violence or grooming, we help prevent, detect and intervene in cases of aggression in virtual environments, especially in the adolescent and young population.
3. Identity and self-image online
How does Instagram influence self-esteem? What impact does the beauty filter in TikTok have on self-image? We study how people build their identity on the Internet and what consequences this has on their emotional well-being.
4. Digital relations and communication
Love, family and social relationships have also changed in the digital age. We analyze how dating apps, messaging communication, or partnering with influencers influence.
5. Psychology of video games and virtual environments
Many of our patients are gamers or spend time on virtual worlds like the metacverse. We study the positive and negative effects of video games, and also how these can be used as a therapeutic tool.
6. Online intervention and psychotherapy
We not only analyze the impact of the digital world: also We work from it.. Many psychologists today offer online therapy, and cyberpsychology is in charge of studying and improving these practices to be safe, effective and ethical.
Why is cyberpsychology so necessary today?
Because technology is not going to disappear: it is increasingly integrated into our life. Cyberpsychology does not seek to satanize the digital world, but understand it to inhabit it in a more conscious, healthy and balanced way. From prevention to intervention, our job is to accompany people, families, institutions and companies in developing a healthier relationship with the digital.
